Defeating the Cemex Mining Project
The City of Santa Clarita was faced with a daunting prospect: Give in to a multi-national mining conglomerate that was launching a mining project that would negatively affect thousands of Valley residents … or fight.
Stacy took an obscure, unknown issue and developed a government and community engagement plan to defeat the massive mining project. The plan included an enormous community engagement effort that resulted in over 800 residents lending their voices, support and strength to the cause; a media-outreach campaign plan that garnered coverage from all major Los Angeles network stations and news outlets; and an intergovernmental relations strategy that engaged local, regional, state and federal lawmakers from both sides the political spectrum — all lending support and credibility to the city’s cause.
The Result: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously against the mining project proposal.
Developing and Launching the Matter of Minutes™ Child Safety Campaign
Two children died in 1994 as a result of being left unattended in a vehicle — a tragedy that not only resulted in the loss of two precious lives, but which also created a firestorm of media attention and controversy.
As a result of this tragic incident, Stacy Miller developed, implemented and launched the Child Care Resource Center’s “Matter of Minutes™” campaign — a crusade aimed at educating millions of residents in Los Angeles County on the dangers of leaving children unattended in, or around vehicles. What began as a crisis mitigation effort quickly turned into a crusade to save the lives of children and reclaim the good name of Stacy’s employer and child care professionals.
The highly-recognized and award-winning Matter of Minutes campaign garnered local, regional and national media attention, engaged many prominent elected officials to serve as spokespersons and hopefully saved the lives of children.
Safeguarding State Funding of Critical Programs
California state lawmakers proposed the elimination of over $300 million dollars in
education funding, a move that would have dealt a significant blow to the child care industry.
In an effort to block this draconian proposal, Stacy devised a bi-partisan plan to educate key lawmakers on the impacts of the funding elimination. To build public consensus, she created a non-traditional interest group coalition whose activities garnered front page media coverage.
As a result of this multi-pronged strategy, Stacy was able to secured a ”No” vote by a key republican Assembly committee member — which assisted in the ultimate defeat of the proposal.
Framing Complex Issues in Simple Terms
Stacy’s client was dependent on multiple funding streams regulated by a complex mix of regional, state and federal regulations. In Sacramento and Washington DC, partisan battles often broke out over the disposition of these funds — often because lawmakers were not clear on the money’s origins or ultimate uses.
In an effort to bring clarity regarding the use of these funds, Stacy developed a comprehensive, district-specific legislative messaging and mapping program aimed at educating federal, state, regional and local elected officials on the ways that her client used the funds to improve the lives of officials’ constituents.
This visually-stimulating, data-driven campaign was extremely successful in creating bi-partisan support — for what was normally a partisan issue — and resulted in the securing of funding for Stacy’s client.
